15th November Update

Another update on K4K project:

The account we established for Appin Hall Children's Foundation is now empty - and that's a good thing! All the funds raised have been spent getting the bus up to standard, mechanically. According to our diligent and brilliant (VW specialist) mechanic: "That bus drives amazingly well, considering it came from off the side of the road. It's a damn fine bus"!

As previously posted, the shortfall of funds is being met by Lions Club of Forth Valley. They met last night and approved drawing a cheque to the mechanic to cover the shortfall which is in the post as I type!

We have decided (and Appin Hall have agreed) that getting the bus registered at this point in time would be wasteful, as the bus still needs to be off the road for a while as body-work and upholstery is completed, so a temporary registration will be obtained for the purposes of the Kombi Konvoy up to Devonport. (More on the Konvoy shortly) The excellent news is that the fine, generous folk at Lions Club of Forth Valley have offered to not only pick up the registration fees this time, but to continue to register the bus on an annual basis in to the future! Isn't that fantastic!?

In terms of the Kombi Konvoy, we are thinking that we will head North from Hobart on a Saturday so that if people are too tired to make the return trip in the same day, they could stay overnight and head home on the Sunday. Lions would like to put on a catered BBQ for all of us when we arrive and we will be contacting media agencies to get some coverage of the Konvoy and of the project in general. At this stage I am proposing that we leave Hobart on Saturday 1st December. I would REALLY appreciate people's feedback on this though as it would be best to have as many people come along as possible. I am hoping Vanders reads this forum as it would be great to meet up with him somewhere along the Midlands Highway so he and family can join in the fun! So calling all Tassie members: does this date work for you and are you going to be part of this awesome day?

More updates as they come to hand.

GREAT NEWS 27th OCTOBER

Hello to everyone and apologies for my recent absence - what with selling my house after renovating madly we took a few days peace and quiet at Coles Bay. On top of having been uncontactable while away, I have also been juggling two jobs and of course the K4K project, so I've been off the radar a bit. Add to all of that, my lap-top dying, you can imagine I haven't been surfing cyber-space terribly often. But, am back temporarily on another computer, to get the chance to update you all as to where we are at.

K4K bus has been legally re-born and has finally passed Dept. Motor Vehicles inspection for road-worthy! Funds are in the process of being released from our ANZ "Appin Hall Children's Foundation" account and transferred across to Ronnie & Maggie's existing accounts. From there, they will be in a position to pay (with our donated funds) our outstanding bill to the mechanic and also Service Tasmania for registration. There was going to be a short-fall of funds to the tune of approximately $750 which Lions have offered to cover, which is brilliant! This means that within a week or two we can have the bus on the road and ready to head North in convoy (or not, depending on availability of Kombi folk) up to Devonport where we hand over to the wonderful Lions club members who will co-ordinate the body work and re-upholstery. Then finally the bus goes where it was always destined to end - Appin Hall Children's Foundation! Ronnie & Maggie are really excited and have been kept in the loop 100%, every step of the way. They would love it to be donated to them before Christmas as they have a lot of kiddies heading there around Christmas-time and we are already discussing media opportunities for exposure and coverage. Ronnie has some great ideas and excellent connections, so we will be able to stretch the coverage significantly, which is great PR for the Foundation.

Let me take this opportunity to thank one and all for your ongoing support of this very worthy cause. Apparently there have been some issues on other forums etc which I have not been party to, and I would like to thank members for their continued support, despite the personal dramas that have ensued as a result. Sincerely, thank you all.

Hopefully now we have turned a corner and we can all see the end of the tunnel and lots of happy faces once we get there!

More updates as they come to hand.

The Kombi Club members are raising funds to refurbish a Kombi Microbus for Maggie and Ronnie Burns Appin Hall Children's Foundation.

The Kombi for Kids project will supply the need of transport for kids and their parents

as well as other needs including transfers from airports or ferries and safety in the event of bushfires or other emergencies.

Support is essential to raise funds or assistance in refurbishing the Microbus.

New-New - New- Our Tasmanian crew with the help of a bit of Kombi spotting by Ronnie Burns has led to aquisition of VW Microbus. The seller donated it as soon as he was told of Kombi for Kids.

We hope to have photos here as soon as bus is collected.

The bus was collected , has had an initial clean.

We will update as soon as we hear about checkup and what may be required for registration in name of Appin Hall Children Foundation.

KOMBI FOR KIDS BUS UPDATE

An update on the Kombi 4 Kids bus:

Bus is now booked in to mechanic on Tuesday 10th April for all necessary work to get it on the road and mobile! (Hooray!!)
BUS DELIVERED TO WORKSHOP TODAY 10th.APRIL
GREAT NEWS TODAY
Friday 13th AM- Bus motor is very strong- fuel lines replaced and report
and estimate of cost to pass roadworthy being prepared.

Once the bus is going it will be able to be driven to the panel beater (Margate Bodyworks) for a respray and straighten - the labour for which has been donated. Once we do have the bus drivable, it will save our donated funds from waste on tow-trucks, which is brilliant!

During and after the re-spray and associated rust treatment etc, the interior will be fitted out, thanks to the generous donations from our comrades in Queensland and associated Eastern Seaboard places (interior parts and tyres - thanks guys - you all know who you are as there is a huge human chain getting bits from A to B!)

Until new tyres arrive, we will use others sourced from a project bus which are currently available for "free hire". That way we will be rolling.

Once the body work is done, the bus will be "wrapped" in vinyl graphics in an illustration done specifically for this project. The illustration and vinyl wrapping have been donated (thanks guys - you know who you are).

At this point, the bus will go back to the mechanic for all the finer points to be honed so that Ronnie and Maggie have a reliable bus that drives like a new car! (As only a well looked after Kombi can!!)

At the same time, the interior will be sent to the upholsterer for re-trimming so that it looks as smart as the bus drives.

Then the fun begins as those who are local get a chance to convoy up to North West Tassie for the handing over of our Nation-wide Kombi Club donation to this worthy cause.

Thanks to all of our many supporters in helping this project come to fruition.

Naturally there will be countless photos to document our progress and constant posts to inform those who are geographically challenged where we are up to. Please stay tuned!

Cheers

Tara
